“My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny. After a while we were left all alone against the most tremendous military power that has been seen. We were all alone for a whole year.”
Winston Churchill 08/05/1945

On the 7th May 1945, German representatives signed the German Instrument of Surrender and officially ended World War II in Europe. On the 8th May 1945, people across Europe celebrated this victory over evil and the  end of 6 years of war, death and misery. In England, people swarmed the streets, partying and dancing; Winston Churchill gave a speech to the people of the country to praise the efforts of all, and members of the Royal family even ventured into the celebrations.

Three months later at the end of August and the start of September, Japan officially surrendered too and signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender (known as Victory over Japan – VJ – Day) and thus ended World War Two and put an end to this dark time in history.

These days are remembered as days of celebration and of relief, rightly so, but it is important to remember all those who gave up their lives to secure these victories and who went out to serve their countries and did not return home.

Today, on the 70th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, people across England will celebrate again. Casemate want to join in these celebrations by offering 20% off to all our customers for the next few days!
