11 novembre 1918. La victoire inachevée… La France croit avoir gagné la guerre, elle n’a gagné qu’une paix précaire. Ce constat dramatique est le point de départ d’un long chemin de croix qui va mener inexorablement le pays, vers le dénouement de juin 1940. Au fil des stations de ce chemin de croix, la France, en totale contradiction entre sa politique étrangère et sa politique de défense, va aller de désillusions en démissions, sans jamais prendre conscience qu’elle n’avait pas ou ne s’est pas donné les moyens de ses ambitions. La déception du Traité de Versailles, l’arrogance des années d’occupation en Rhénanie, l’illusion du pacte de Locarno, le choix de la défensive alors qu’elle a accordé sa garantie à de nombreux pays avec lesquels elle n’a aucune frontière commune, la passivité face à la montée en puissance allemande, le manque de réaction suite à la neutralité belge, la démission de Munich, tout cela ne pouvait que conduire à une entrée en guerre mal préparée et mal gérée. Lorsque le 10 mai 1940, l’Allemagne donne le coup d’envoi des opérations à l’ouest, l’armée française va accumuler les maladresses, amplifiant malgré elle les succès allemands. Pris dans le tourbillon de la fulgurante percée allemande, le commandement n’aura à aucun moment la possibilité d’inverser le cours des événements et les nouvelles calamiteuses vont s’enchaîner telle une tragédie grecque. Après quarante-cinq jours de combat au cours desquels l’héroïsme le dispute à la lâcheté, le courage aux défaillances, la France arrive au terme de son calvaire. Ce sont les causes de cette inexorable défaite, des plus évidentes aux plus insoupçonnées, que ce livre se propose d’analyser point par point.

Le Me 262 et le P-51 représentent un sommet en termes de design, de performance et de capacité au combat en raison de leur puissance de vol respectives. Avec ses débuts opérationnels à l'été 1944 et propulsé par le moteur Jumo 004, le ME 262 dépassait tout ce que les Alliés possédaient en puissance de feu et en vitesse. Cependant la disponibilité des deux machines ainsi que celle de pilotes entrainés devenait un problème insurmontable pour la Luftwaffe. Pendant ce temps, le P-51, avec son moteur Rolls-Royce (Packard) Merlin et ses réservoirs largables permet à la USAAF d'avoir un avion de combat capable d'escorter ses bombardiers au plus profond de l'espace aérien du Reich, et de revenir, et ce sur plus de 1 700 kilomètres. Bien plus encore, poussé à ses limites, le P-51 était capable de tenir la dragée haute au redouté Me 262, malgré la différence de puissance et de vitesse-limite. En fait, le Mustang permettra de prouver aux engins de la Luftwaffe qu'il serait sa Nemesis (son châtiment). Il s'agit ici de la version française d'un livre Osprey, premier d'une série.

Une vision inédite de l'une des plus importantes batailles de juin 1940. La chronique du périple de la compagnie de canons d'infanterie hippomobile du célèbre Régiment «List», qui s'illustra en 1914 et fut aussi le régiment d'un certain Adolf Hitler. Jour après jour, nous suivons cette unité de la Rhénanie à la Normandie, en passant par Saint-Quentin, Amiens, Le Havre, Rouen et Giberville, à côté de Caen. Jour après jour, nous partageons le quotidien de ces fantassins, les conditions difficiles de ce voyage qui les mène jusqu'au coeur de la bataille d'Abbeville, au cours de laquelle la 57e division d'infanterie bavaroise se confronte à la 4e DCR du colonel de Gaulle... Face à des centaines de blindés, la 13e compagnie résista pendant de longues journées jusqu'au succès final. Jour après jour, dans un carnet, le caporal O. Bär consigne ses mots : descriptions sensibles et attentives ; réflexions intimes et réalistes ; étonnements humanistes sur les situations de combat, sur la traversée de territoires «désertés» et fantomatiques. Tel un reporter de guerre, ce jeune caporal allemand témoigne, et son style certain donne à ce témoignage l'épaisseur d'un récit. Publié en août 40, ce carnet, fait de textes et de photos originales et inédites d'O. Bär, est un document rare et exceptionnel.

Étalée sur trois années, de 1943 à 1946, l'épuration dite sauvage a fait une petite centaine de victimes en Normandie. Cette petite centaine est à confronter avec l'épuration légale réalisée entre 1944 et 1947 : 39 sont fusillés après avoir été condamnés à mort par une cour de justice. Dès 1943 certains résistants ne pouvaient attendre la restauration de la République et commençaient à éliminer des collaborateurs qu'ils jugeaient dangereux pour la Résistance. Décidée hors de tout cadre légal ou parfois après un simulacre de jugement, l'épuration extra-judiciaire s'exerçait rapidement et avec violence, prenant un aspect exutoire à l'exemple de la tonte des femmes. En Normandie, l'épuration dite sauvage fut relativement modérée, le souhait des nouveaux gouvernants français étant d'éviter à tout prix une guerre civile entre les Français.

After spending four years in the Merchant Navy discovering the world and its pleasures, Werner Henke entered the Reichsmarine as an officer cadet in 1934. However, his need for freedom to go and resume his feminine conquests, his brawling, his love of jazz and dancing, excluded him from the active service of the officer corps of the Kriegsmarine in February 1941. He was aboard U-124 at the time as third officer, out on patrol. Picked out by Admiral Doenitz who was looking for strong personalities to command his U-Boats, he continuedthe patrol as an “officer on availability”. The admiral told him that if he was successful, his slate would be wiped clean. During his last patrol as second officer of U-124, he proved himself by supervising the firing of the torpedoes which sank 6 allied ships. He was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class, was reinstated for active service and was then given command of U-515, a Type IXC in February 1942. With a good crew, he obtained impressive results on his first patrol in the Caribbean by bringing back 10 pennants on his periscope when he returned to Lorient. His submarine, which entered the fray late during the summer of 1942, had already escaped 5 Allied attacks. Without hesitating he confronted a convoy of British warships alone in November 1942 ; he was also one of the rare U-Boats to obtain a kill during the Allied landings in North Africa ; U-515 resisted more than 200 depth charges. Captain Henke was awarded the Knight’s Cross. During his third patrol in the spring of 1943, as German submarine successes were on the decline, U-515 sailed to Freetown and crossed the path of a convoy in which he created panic. He sank 7 ships with their cargo, an operation that was so disastrous for the Allies that Churchill askedfor a report. Henke escaped another 6 Allied attacks. After returning to Lorient with 11 pennants, Henke was awarded the Oak Leaves. On leave in Germany, this navy officer with the strong character, who had already fought an SS officer, destroyed a local Gestapo office. The fourth patrol was cut short by the damage caused after a twelve-hour pursuit by destroyers who dropped more than 310 depth charges… Despite the shooting and the charges by a destroyer, then an attack by two bombers, the fifth patrol ended with four extra boats sunk. But when this ace of the 10th Flotilla left again on combat patrol, his experience and his cunning were not enough to save his submarine. Chased by a whole armada, he was taken prisoner by the Americans and, a rebel to the end, he chose his own destiny…

Born in June 1922, in Baden, Richard Freiherr von Rosen was to become a true Panzer man. Coming from a noble family, although he wasn’t attracted by war, he nonetheless started an officer’s career. At 18, he was incorporated into the Panzer-Ersatz-Abteilung 35. A rigorous period, after which he spent a few months of occupation in South West France before getting his baptism of fire in a Panzer III during the attack against the USSR, at the end of June 1941. Wounded a few weeks later then recovered, at the beginning of 1942, he joined the famous Wunsdorf armour school out of which he graduated as a Leutnant. In January 1943, von Rosen joined the schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502, equipped with brand new Tiger tanks in which he served on the harsh Eastern Front, in the Kalmuks Plain, before being transferred to the powerful s.Pz-Abt.503 as Zugführer. There, Baron von Rosen went through several bitter armoured confrontations to the south of Kursk, then long months of fighting across the Ukraine into Galicia in the spring of 1944, endlessly confronting the masses of Red Army T-34s. A few weeks after D-Day, the “503” was sent to Normandy where von Rosen and his “Tigers” were hit full blast by Operation Goodwood, to the east of Caen : fierce fighting against British tanks at Emiéville and Manneville. Losses were heavy and the Anglo-American superiority was crushing… Von Rosen and his battalion were withdrawn from the Normandy front, got back in condition, and then issued with new monsters, the “Königstigers”.

Appearing within the context of the Crusades in Palestine, the militaro-religious order of the Teutonic Knights imposed itself as an essential player in a relatively unknown episode in our part of the world: the conquest and evangelisation of the last pagans in Europe. Living to the south-east of the Baltic Sea, these pagans were confronted with missionary and warlike enterprises rather like crusades. Called upon to defend the frontiers of Poland against the pagans in Prussia, the brothers of the Teutonic Order carved a real state for themselves in this area of the Marches of Christianity. In its desire to tap the crusading spirit so dear to the nobility, the Teutonic order regularly invited knights from all over Europe to join in its military endeavours. Thus it was that a large number of French and English nobles, among them some key figures in the Hundred Years’ War, went off to distant Prussia to fight the “Saracens of the North”. For the rivalries which opposed the Teutonic Knights to their neighbours, pagan or Christian, led not only to military, but also doctrinal, confrontations causing debate about the rights of non-Christian peoples. This book offers a look at the history of the Order of the Teutonic Knights but brings to the forefront its role as a link between the world of chivalry and that of the pagans of North-eastern Europe. The relations of the men with the black crosses and the Baltic peoples, but also with the lords of Western Europe who came to help them, just like their role in the controversial use of force as a tool of conversion, enabled a little-known facet of medieval Europe to be revealed: its eminently cosmopolitan character, making light of national or regional borders and sometimes religious ones, too.

4 juin 1944, 18h30, sud de l'Angleterre. Des officiers de liaison montent à bord de vingt-deux bâtiments français. Enfermés avec les commandants, ils leur remettent une grande enveloppe cachetée. Dès le départ des Anglais, les « pachas » découvrent leurmission dans l'opération « Neptune » (nom de code donné au débarquement des troupes alliées en Normandie). Les équipages sont réunis. Les hommes découvrent qu'ils seront les premiers Français à contribuer au débarquement. Beaucoup parmi ces marins venus de France qui vont participer à la plus vaste opération navale de tous les temps ont rejoint de Gaulle en Grande-Bretagne. En revanche certains, à commencer par leur chef l'Amiral Jaujard, sont plus réticents à l'égard du général. C'est l'histoire de ces bateaux et de ces hommes qui forme le coeur du livre. Parmi eux, Querville avec son sous-marin la Junon qui a débarqué en Norvège un commando chargé de faire sauter une usine d'eau lourde; ou Levasseur avec l'Aconit qui a coulé deux U-Boote en douze heures. La participation des marins français est rarement, voire jamais, évoquée lorsqu'on célèbre les anniversaires du débarquement en Normandie. Assault guns were the first armoured vehicles in Waffen SS divisions to be used at the beginning of their military history. This first volume presents Abteilung “Schönberger” from the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, in the frontline since 1941 which became SS StuG-Abteilungen “LSSAH”, and in which a young tank commander – Michael Wittmann – began to distinguish himself. We follow the unit during all its engagements. Still in 1941, SS-StuG-Batterie “Reich” engaged in Operation Barbarossa, was the embryo of 2 SS-Panzer-Division assault gun group of the “Das Reich” which we also see in operations. We watch the evolution and the engagement of the first two Waffen-SS Divisions’ assault artillery groups with their histories, eye-witness accounts and numerous photographs, most of which are as yet unpublished, including some superb photos of vehicles, as is usual in the books by Pierre Tiquet. Other volumes will follow presenting the assault gun units from the other Waffen-SS divisions.

After his books about the Pointe du Hoc, WN 62 and recently Pegasus Bridge and the Melville Battery, von Keusgen gives us here a lively chronological account of the airborne attacks carried out by the legendary 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in the first hours of the Battle of Normandy. The author moreover has had access to period documents which up until now have remained in the shadows, about Generalleutnant Wilhelm Falley and his aide de camp, Major Bartuzat, liquidated during the night of 5 to 6 June 1944. The text is accompanied by a lot of photographs. Without any doubt, this book will motivate those interested in paratroopers and the fighting in the Cotentin Peninsula.

When U-172, commanded by Carl Emmermann left Kiel on 22 April 1942, the second lucky period for German submarines was ending with the Americans setting up convoys along their coast. From the beginning of the conflict, the means of fighting submarines brought in to play by the Allies, had increased considerably : development of on-board radar, increased numbers of escorts and planes, decrypting submarine radio messages, etc. As a result, combat conditions had seriously deteriorated on the German side. However, from May 1942 to September 1943, Carl Emmermann’s U-172 sank 26 ships during combat patrols, and thus overtook the 150 000-ton figure of Allied shipping destroyed. U-172 was thus 15th of all the U-Boote which had obtained the best results, an exceptional result considering the period in the war. First of all because this submarine went to areas which were especially distant where successwas still possible: the Caribbean for the first mission; the Cape in South Africa for the second where it took part in a surprise attack in a zone where no U-Boot had ever strayed until then; the centre of the Atlantic for its third mission where two convoys were chased in a pack right up to the African coast; the coast of Brazil for the fourth where it was the only one out of seven U-Boote engaged to return. The captain was an good officer and much liked by his men: members of a crew attached to their CO who held on to them preciously from one mission to the next. At the end of his 4th combat mission, Carl Emmermann was the 25th commanding officer of the submarine arm to be awarded the Knights Cross with oak leaves. He accepted a land posting and became the head of the 6th Flotilla at Saint-Nazaire at the beginning of November 1943. U-172 which had already survived 12 air and sea attacks, left on its 6th and last patrol. Without its charismatic captain and in even more difficult combat conditions, it was sunk 21 days after it left. The access the author, a U-Boot specialist, had to Emmermann’s photos preserved in the U-Boot-Archiv and to several photos taken by Helmut Berndt, the war correspondent, enabled the book to illustrate this particular captain’s surprising patrols with 250 exceptional unpublished photos. Thanks to the translation of the log book, to the eye-witness account by Captain Emmermann himself and the patrol sketches, you can follow U-172 on its missions across distant oceans…
