Hickmann describes a 17th century work by Guaman Poma chronicling the first period of the Conquista. Details from this book are comparable to archaeological finds of musical instruments that have since disappeared. The author provides illustrations of ancient Andean instruments.

Lund describes the development of Scandinavian music history from 1797 with the first discovery of lurs in Denmark to the modern discipline as it is established in research during the 19th and 20th centuries. Systematic orientation came in the 1970s.

A collection of 16 essays on the artist’s painting and works for the theatre between 1910 and 1924. The essays explore the colour theories that gave rise to her abstract painting and the basic laws of structure that gave order to her Cubist, Simultaneist, Non-Objective painting and her stage and costume design. Contemporary accounts of her three plays, Famira Kifared, Salome, and Romeo and Juliet are included together with extracts from Alexander Tairov’s, Notes of a Director (1921). The book closes with a detailed and illustrated Chronology of Exter’s exhibitions and paintings.

This publication is the only available English-language monograph to date on sixteenth-century sculptor Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi (c. 1455–1528), who earned the nickname 'Antico' with his highly refined reductions of Greco-Roman antiquities. His bronzes – many of which were produced at the brilliant court of Isabella d'Este at Mantua – were remarkable for being meticulously cast and finely cleaned and finished, designed for close appreciation in the privacy of a courtly studio. His black patination and exquisite detailing, such as gilded hair and silver-inlaid eyes, are characteristic. Given Antico's importance for the history of sculpture, this book is a much needed resource in the field, presenting new scientific research and the results of technical studies undertaken at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Sharing Knowledge & Cultural Heritage (SK&CH), First Nations of the Americas, testifies to the growing commitment of museum professionals in the twenty-first century to share collections with the descendants of people and communities from whom the collections originated. Thanks to collection histories and the documenting of relations with particular indigenous communities, it is well known that until as recently as the 1970s, museum doors - except for a handful of cases - were shut to indigenous peoples.This volume is the result of an "expert meeting" held in November 2007 at the National Museum of Ethnology (NME) in Leiden, the Netherlands. Since then SK&CH projects have developed. The NME invited leading indigenous as well as non-native professional experts in the field from the Americas and Europe to explore and discuss case studies based on fieldwork, collecting material culture and/or work with indigenous communities in Greenland, the Canadian Arctic, North America and Central and South America.

John Keith Vaughan (23 August 1912-4 November 1977) was a British painter. Born in Selsey, Vaughan attended Christ's Hospital school. He worked in an advertising agency until the war, when as an intending conscientious objector he joined the St John's Ambulance; in 1941 he was conscripted into the Non-Combatant Corps. Vaughan was self-taught as an artist. His first exhibitions took place during the war. In 1942 he was stationed at Ashton Gifford near Codford in Wiltshire, and paintings from this time include The Wall at Ashton Gifford (Manchester Art Gallery). During the war Vaughan formed friendships with the painters Graham Sutherland and John Minton, with whom after demobilization in 1946 he shared premises. This publication accompanied the exhibition Keith Vaughan: Gouaches, Drawings & Prints at Osborne Samuel Gallery in 2011. With an enlightening essay by Gerard Hastings, written especially for the catalogue, it includes selected entries from the artist’s journals which help to understand his working methods. The book includes images from the exhibition’s remarkable collection of over 100 gouaches, drawings and lithographs; many which had not been seen before from private collections over the last 20 years. Vaughan’s skill as a draughtsman is self-evident in the selected works which span the whole of the artist’s career, so tragically halted in 1977.

The 15th- or early 16th-century panels presented here are mostly from northern Europe, or at least within the zone of Netherlandish influence rather than Italian. They are all almost unknown, and certainly none of them have been subjected to modern techniques of investigation—infrared, x-ray, micro-photography. What is important is their quality, even if some are difficult to attribute or can be associated only with other works by this or that ‘master of’. This book is an exemplary investigation of a series of, so far, poorly documented works that will prove of great interest to those in the field. Most of the 15th- or early 16th-century panel paintings presented here are northern European, a large number German, which have been neglected in English language studies. They are all almost unknown, and certainly none of them have been subjected to modern techniques of investigation – infrared, x-ray, micro-photography – until now. What makes these works of importance is their fine quality, which is reflected in some of the most spectacular examples such as the beautiful 15th century Dormition of the Virgin by the Master of the Vienna Marienaltar and The Holy Trinity (Seat of Mercy) with saints and donor by Peter Hemmel and his circle from 1479.

Mary’s career has been dedicated to the exploration of abstract form though painting and printmaking. This exhibition catalogue supporting Mary Webb’s exhibition, Journeys in Colour contains images of more than 60 of Mary’s paintings, along with a collection of screen prints, drawings and collages including the series of paintings that were inspired by her time spent abroad in Utah. A pupil of the late Sonia Delaunay, Mary’s works are consistently square in shape and exist as an arrangement of vivid squares and rectangles. The 71-year-old artist admits that “colour is [her] main concern”, which accounts for the vibrancy of her work, but she also explains that she strives to avoid “having a centre, or part of the picture that claims attention more than the rest”.
