This volume is based on three years of teaching experiments with a group of primary school students as they progressed from the 3rd to the 5th class (ages 9 to 12). Whereas traditional pedagogical approaches focus on the nature of the subject matter being taught, Hedegaard assumes that any teaching program ought to incorporate children's everyday concepts and motivations. She relates this "double move" in teaching to situated learning and teaching and subsequently presents principles for putting the approach into practice. The experiments also aim to promote developmental learning rather than mere subject mastery. The first half of this book seeks to be theoretical, aiming to conceptualise the experiments in a culturo-historical framework, the second is practical in design. It presents and dissects a teaching example from history, as well as three extended case studies of individual students in orientation, an interdisciplinary subject that embraces biology, geography and history.

Since colonial times, Americans have viewed themselves as distinct from the inhabitants of other lands. Today, many still do: relishing a sense of their uniqueness more than ever, upholding the superiority of their democratic ideals and the vitality of their economic system. In an era of globalisation and post-modernity, meanwhile, scholarly discussion of American Exceptionalism among historians, sociologists, political scientists and literary and cultural critics has continued to pursue new directions. This issue of "The Dolphin" assesses the state of Exceptionalist debates at the close of what Henry Luce dubbed "the American century". Some of the essays revisit well-established expressions of Exceptionalism in American cultural history, while others draw on recent work in newer academic fields, including feminist and African-American studies, to develop or revise Exceptionalist discourses. Still others examine the concept in little-studied contexts, connecting it with such phenomena as judicial activism, regionalism and the Information Age. Embracing critical and sympathetic viewpoints alike, "Marks of Distinction" combines new scholarship from both sides of the Atlantic for an up-to-date survey of Exceptionalism, one of the most long-standing concerns of American Studies, from its origins to the present.

New globalised religions take two forms. Unlike new religions such as Transcendental Meditation, the former Unification Church and The Family, which are just a few of the recent religions to form networks of essentially identical communities around the world, the New Age beliefs discussed in this volume have spread without the benefit of any organisation or unified culture, and their more diffuse nature resists easy categorisation. While some of the chapters in this publication consider aspects of the general nature of New Age religion, the remaining chapters are case studies which examine particular New Age beliefs, including the healing movement, the spiritualisation of money and the UFO, gnostic and goddess myths.

In our poll-driven age, political attitude surveys have become something of an academic industry. Researchers have proposed numerous models to explain the relationship between a particular issue and voter behaviour, but there is no consensus on which approaches work best. The Greek city of Nikopolis was founded by Octavian (later known as the Emperor Augustus) after his victory in the naval battle of nearby Actium in 31 BC. The city was a result of a so-called synoecism, i.e. , the inhabitants of numerous Greek cities in the region (Epirus, Acharnania and Aetolia) were forced to leave their former dwellings and establish themselves in the newly built city, which became the capital of the coastal region. Since 1987 a joint Greek-American archaeological and geological Nikopolis project has registered, conserved and restored monuments inside and outside the city and conducted a survey of Southern Epirus aiming at understanding the changing relationship between humans and landscap

The turn of the 20th to the 21st century provides an excellent vista for a look into language, especially the English language, literature, cultures, economics and European studies. Several essays deal specifically with issues of the 1990s, but others provide a contrast by looking into issues of the 1890s and one looks at 1000 AD. This is an excellent book for an educated overview of what we can expect in the new century. Contributors debate the significance of the ends and beginnings of centuries and millennia and touch on the controversy over when these actually occur, the end of the 99 year or the end of the 00 year. As an example of its wide-ranging focus, literary interpretations of the millennium are analysed from the standpoint of social sciences and vice versa. The contributors were chosen not only for the quality of their individual work but for their capacity to offer unexpected new perspectives on a topical and much-debated theme.

From 1987 to 1990, in collaboration with several Danish research institutes, the Tunisian Institut National de Patrimoine carried out an extensive archaeological survey in the valley known as the Segermes basin, in Tunisia. The results of that work are contained in three volumes entitled 'Africa Proconsularis' This volume reviews the information and looks at the historical conclusions.

The nominal case forms disappeared from the Scandinavian languages long ago. Instead, the function of the case forms is represented by word order. Only the pronouns still have all case distinctions. Traditionally the case forms of the personal pronouns have been regarded as a remnant of the original case forms. This book, however, presents a different view. Drawing on structural, semantic and pragmatic approaches the author shows that the personal pronouns form a system which is, to some extent, structured in quite a different way. The author examines this system and illustrates with the help of many examples that the personal pronouns show a strong tendency under certain conditions to drop or change the function of specific inflectional forms. This tendency, however, is strongest in connection with dialects and sociolects. In his study the author puts a special emphasis on the Danish language, but he also draws on examples taken from the Norwegian, Swedish and Fenno-Swedish languages. This book should appeal to all who have an interest in linguistics.

Under the auspices of the British Museum, C.T. Newton started excavations in 1857 on the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the sepulchral monument to the Carian ruler, Maussollos. Sensational finds were made of sculptures in round and reliefs, but less attention was paid to the architectural remains of the superstructure, and afterwards it was made clear that supplementary investigations on the site would be needed, if a more complete and reliable reconstruction of the building was to be hoped for than that suggested by Newton and his collaborators. This volume describes the foundations of the Mausolleion laid within the large, rectangular cutting in the bedrock and named "the quadrangle" by Newton. In addition to architectural evidence of basic importance, its re-excavation by the Danish expedition in the years 1970-77 brought to light remains of Maussollos' tomb chamber and its treasures, among these the ornaments of gold plate and beads of semi-precious stones published in the present volume. The illustrations include a plan of the re-excavated foundations; elevations of cross-sections describing the principal features of the excavated area; excavation photos; and a plot plan of the principle levels.

People across the English-speaking world are often surprised to hear that 19th-century Denmark produced not one, but two figures of international significance in the field of religious thought and life, Soren Kierkegaard and NFS Grundtvig. Apart from the impact of his educational ideas on some parts of the southern hemisphere, most notably India, Grundtvig's viewpoint on human nature and human society, on the relationship between national and international community, on the inner dynamic which sustains and drives forward the Christian tradition, remains remarkably little known outside his own country. In recent years, however, this situation has begun to change. Grundtvig's thought is being more widely studied and discussed in an international perspective. This varied collection of essays, mostly European and North American, illustrates this development. It suggests that in NFS Grundtvig we have a 19th-century thinker with unexpected relevance to the dilemmas of the new century.
