This first volume in a series of works on Tell Kosak Shamali focuses on the Chalcolithic deposits at the site, or the Ubaid period. Located on the east bank of the Euphrates the site held an important strategic position and one which had a diverse set of resources available. Investigated since the 1980s and most recently by the University of Tokyo, this volume reports on the results of the excavations, detailing the geographical and cultural setting of the site, the architecture and stratigraphy, the radiocarbon dates, the nature of the finds and the history of the site in the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic. Evidence from Kosak Shamali provides important insights into the transition from Neolithic agrarian societies to more complex, increasingly urban societies of the Chalcolithic.

In 1952 in one wing of the North-West Palace at Nimrud, ancient Kalhu, Max Mallowan excavated an archive room containing royal correspondence from the reigns of Tiglath-pileser III and Sargon II of Assyria. Subjects include Assyrian military activity in Babylonia and on the northern frontier, royal building projects, events on the Phoenician seaboard, and relations with King Midas of Phrygia. Some texts were published in Iraq between 1955 and 1974; the majority have remained unpublished until now. Two hundred and forty-three texts are published here; most are in New Assyrian script and the remainder in New Babylonian. Chapters divide the tablets into the geographical areas they are concerned with. The texts are presented with transliterations, translation and notes. Plates at the end of the book give facsimiles of the tablets.

In the early 1990s the University of Cambridge reopened excavations at the Neolithic site of Catalhöyuek in central Turkey, abandoned since the 1960s. In this volume, Ian Hodder explains his vision of archaeological excavation, where careful examination of context and an awareness of human bias allows researches exciting new insights into prehistoric cognition. The aim of the volume is to discuss some of the reflexive or postprocessual methods that have been introduced at the site in the work there since 1993. These methods involve reflexivity, interactivity, multivocality and contextuality or relationality.

Under the auspices of the British Museum, C.T. Newton started excavations in 1857 on the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the sepulchral monument to the Carian ruler, Maussollos. Sensational finds were made of sculptures in round and reliefs, but less attention was paid to the architectural remains of the superstructure, and afterwards it was made clear that supplementary investigations on the site would be needed, if a more complete and reliable reconstruction of the building was to be hoped for than that suggested by Newton and his collaborators. This volume describes the foundations of the Mausolleion laid within the large, rectangular cutting in the bedrock and named "the quadrangle" by Newton. In addition to architectural evidence of basic importance, its re-excavation by the Danish expedition in the years 1970-77 brought to light remains of Maussollos' tomb chamber and its treasures, among these the ornaments of gold plate and beads of semi-precious stones published in the present volume. The illustrations include a plan of the re-excavated foundations; elevations of cross-sections describing the principal features of the excavated area; excavation photos; and a plot plan of the principle levels.

Seemingly contradictory ideas of privacy and community dominate Ottoman cities. While houses are internally divided to guard female modesty behind a frontage studded with peep-holes, streets in cities like Amasya are often bridged by first-floor passageways between different houses. This book contains 17 papers by architects and archaeologists looking at how the Ottoman house was structured, how it has varied over time and space, and how surviving examples are faring in a world of breeze-block construction. Although the examples discussed are all Near Eastern, and mostly from Turkey, the revelations this book contains about structuring principles will make it a valuable companion to understanding architectural relics from all over the Ottoman Empire.

Two-Volume Set. This is the last volume in the series of reports from the Danish excavations on the ancient Tall of the important Syrian site and town of Hama. It presents the medieval architecture of the mound from the Arab conquest in 636 to 1401 when the citadel of Hama was destroyed by Timur Lenk. The excavations revealed that the early Islamic town was not as insignificant as previously believed. The periods of Hama's greatest strength were, however, the 12th and 13th centuries, when many different structures were built on the mound, such as a bath, mills and other industrial structures (among these a workshop for the production of grenades). Its fortifications mainly dated from the 12th century, although an older Byzantine wall was also found.

As the waters of the Saddam Dam rose in 1984-5 the British Museum battled to record an important Late Assyrian site on the east bank of the Tigris. Part of a 7th-century BC building was uncovered. Specialist reports on the ceramics, bones and shells recovered provide further clues to daily life outside the Assyrian capital cities. Due to the fragmentary nature of the evidence recovered, this report lacks any real discussion of the significance of the site or the meaning of the evidence.

Introductory report and a detailed illustrated catalogue of the pottery finds from this second millennium BC Assyrian site, in modern northern Iraq.

A report on seven hoards of Greek and Greek Imperial coins, four hoards of Roman Imperial coins and catalogues of six other collections of mostly provenanced coins. There is also a die-study of the extensive bronze coinage of Gordian III minted at 6 Caesarea in Cappadocia. This volume provides a companion to `Recent Turkish Hoards and Numismatic Studies'.

This is the first report to be published on the Biblical kingdom of Eden, the Iron Age site of Tawilan. Particular attention is paid to the cuneiform tablet and gold jewellery hoard, the first to be discovered in Jordan. The stratigraphy, ceramics and other finds are also comprehensively analysed by Piotr Bienkowski and other specialists, and an overview of the development and nature of the site is provided.

The conference in Manchester in 1992 which this book came out of was organised to raise the profile of the study of mortuary remains in the Ancient Near East. Thirty papers from the conference are published here, covering a wide variety of regions and periods, from Epipalaeolithic to modern. Many different aspects are examined: physical anthropology, burial goods, social structure, ethoarchaeology, etc. This volume has a wide relevance not only to the areas specifically addressed, but also in the interpretation of burial remains and the evolution of society.

Final report of Danish excavations on the northern wall surrounding a city of the 3rd-2nd millenia BC and an Islamic fortress in Bahrain. The following volumes will detail the results of excavations at different parts of the walls and in the central part of the settlement. The excavations finished in 1978. A collection of unpublished papers by Alan Hall, a leading authority on the history and epigraphy of classical Asia Minor, supported by contributions by scholars associated with him. Subjects include the indigenous names of Asia Minor, the festivals of Oenoanda, inscriptions and the topgraphy of Lycia, Phyrgia and Pisidia.

The three sites discussed in this volume provide a series of overlapping sequences that flesh out the cultural developments in East-Central Anatolia during most, if not all, of the third millennium BC.
