^Aby A. Davison, B. Green and W. Milligan ^DPart of the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Illington was excavated by Group Captain Knocker in 1949. 200 cremation urns and 3 inhumations were mapped and lifted, and the remains of about two hundred other vessels were also recovered. Many of the decorated urns belong to the Illington/Lackford workshop, and the finds assemblage as a whole suggests that the cemetery was in use during the 6th and 7th centuries. The cremated human bones were the subject of a pioneering study by the late Calvin Wells. Alan Davison's parish survey did not locate any Early Saxon domestic sites, and it is thought that the original Saxon holding may have been larger than the medieval parish.

This is the first of a number of volumes describing the 1980-86 excavations at the early medieval Benedictine abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno in central Italy. This volume gives a general introduction to this important project, a description of the archaeological remains, and then detailed accounts of the excavation of the Carolingian Crypt Church, the `South Church', the Refectory, the Garden Court and the Entrance Hall. Also included is a reappraisal of the cycle of paintings in the crypt in the light of the excavations.

Tille Hoyuk was excavated between 1979 and 1990 by the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara as part of the Turkish Lower Euphrates Rescue Project. The site revealed important remains of the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, and of the Achaemenid, and Hellenistic periods, as well as a Medieval phase. Between the 12th and 15th centuries the prehistoric mound was occupied by the fortified residence of a local chieftain. This volume contains a discussion of the methodology and stratigraphy of the excavation, followed by catalogues of the pottery, metal objects and coins.

A study on the chronology of the sculpture, primarily large-scale, of the Parthian Empire. The catalogue describes individual sculptural monuments and enumerates results and proposals of previous research. The text volume attempts to date the monuments according to their style and other criteria (such as iconographical traits, historical identifications or the contents of accompanying inscriptions and technical details). The study deals with sculptures from the central part of the Parthian Empire, defined as the area from around the Euphrates in the west (including a few monuments from Edesa and ancient Armenia) to the eastern frontiers of Iran, and from the Persian Gulf in the south to Parthyene, the southern part of Soviet Turkmenistan, in the north. However, some ivory reliefs found at Olbia and normally included in studies on Parthian art are also treated here.

The early Roman empire took a militaristic attitude towards its neighbours, but by the reign of Justinian a complex stance had evolved in which military force was tempered by diplomacy. Covering the period from the Peace of Nisibis in 299 to the death of Anastasius in 518, the author traces the development of the diplomatic element in late East Roman foreign policy from a mere adjunct or epilogue to war, into something with the capacity of being an alternative for war. This fascicule describes the ground stone objects from the 1959-69 excavations at Mycenae. Don Evely describes the vases (36 complete and fragmentary pieces including `Minoan' birds' nest bowls and Mycenaean piriform jars,, fragments of rhyta and legged mortars) and other objects (inlays in valuable stones such as lapis lazuli and lapis lacedaemonius , mushroom shaped pommels, a steatite jewellery mould and other items). Curtis Runnels discusses sixteen domestic millstones.

Catullus' two wedding poems contain important statements regarding the poet's personality, Roman sexual morality, attitudes to love and marriage, and the practice and psychology of ancient religion. This work subjects the two poems to detailed analysis, and yields new insights into the ritual drama enacted, the mythical and erotic dimensions, and the depiction of male and female. The poems are shown to be more provocative than is usually recognised; marriage is conceived as eternal wedding night.

This third report of the Danish Archaeological Expedition to Bodrum is devoted to study of the terrace on which the Maussolleion was built. Seventy five trenches were dug in gardens and orchards to examine the extent and nature of the perimeter revetment and its facing wall, the surfacing of the terrace platform, and the foundation of the building that stood at its entrance, at the centre of the east side. Also included is a transcript of G M A Biliotti's diary recording excavations on behalf of the British Museum at the site of the Mausoleum in 1865 (with transcripts of inscriptions) and an account of the early history of marginally drafted masonry.

The second Norfolk volume covers a substantial tract of peat fen defined by three rivers, and incorporates the only island of any size in the Norfolk Fens. The rapid shrinkage of peat on the upland edge has revealed a densely-occupied zone that was settled from the Mesolithic through to the Bronze Age. Human settlement is viewed against changing environmental conditions as the Embayment became waterlogged and the fen edge was deserted in historic times. Investigation of the Roman road known as the Fen Causeway revealed a canal, and the associated salt-making and peat cutting economy.

The craftsmanship of longboat-building is not something we can draw on today, so when the Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde wanted to look into this ancient skill, they needed to track down people who still had the tradition of boat-building in their culture. This book looks at the boat-building and culture of the Punan Bah people of Borneo and then puts the longboat in its wider cultural-historical perspective.

A secure supply of safe water is essential for the development of civilised life. The great aqueducts of the Roman period are lasting and visible symbols of ancient achievements in this area, while other, less spectacular but equally well adapted water storage and distribution systems served communities of different types. All of these systems are of interest to archaeologists and to historians of engineering and technology. This volume contains thirteen papers by leaders in the field of Roman hydraulics in response to the question: "What would be the approach most profitably to be pursued in future studies in Roman aqueducts?" The nucleus is the five revised papers of the colloquium chaired by A. T. Hodge in New York in 1987. Eight further papers were added at the editor's invitation, to make a volume varied in approach and in geographical spread, unified by the international distinction of the contributors. Trevor Hodge himself contributes a masterly, and entertaining, concluding essay on the whole question of the interdisciplinary nature of his field, its possibilities, problems and pleasures.
